Words are Powerful

Hey guys, I've been working on this poem off and on for a few months now. Sometimes I just get into a really rhymey mood. It's about how sometimes people can be so wrapped up in their own lives that they forget about being kind. I know how badly words can hurt people and I wanted to show people both sides of the story. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all. Spread love, not hate. You can make someone's day a million times better if you say something nice, but you can also make it a million times worse if you're too wrapped up in yourself to be kind to others. The world doesn't revolve around you. We're all in life together, so let's act like it.

Anyways, I'll stop going on about it and just let you read it.

"Be Careful..."
By Me... Ashley

Always be careful with the things that you say. Just because there's a smile doesn't mean they're okay.

A weapon is not the thing that can hurt them the most. The words that you say can haunt like a ghost.

You didn't even mean them in a hurtful way, and all you wanted to do was play.

But they had a battle they were struggling to fight, even though they fought with all of their might.

That sparkle that used to shine bright in their eyes, is now turning into cloudy gray skies.

Telling the kind of jokes with a nasty bite, not even noticing when it dims their inner light.

They try to quiet the voices in their head, the ones that whisper to them every night before bed.

Your words echo in their brain playing on repeat, feeling pain so bad it causes their heart to skip a beat.

They started to lose the war in their mind, all because you couldn't remember to be kind.

When all the while you don't even recall, the words that you said to make them feel so small.

You're off living life as full as it gets, not thinking about them or having regrets.

You've gone and forgotten those words that you used, while the other sits there feeling hurt and abused.

They sit all alone and afraid, crying their tears, because they've felt betrayed for so many years.

They tried to fix it each and every day, wishing the pain would just all go away.

You made them feel as though they weren't enough, but they tried to hide it and pretend to be tough.

They made a decision based in fear and depression, Going through with it wasn't even a question.

By this point they were convinced they were worthless, that the life they were living had absolutely no purpose....

One day in your life you felt a little down, just having the kind of day where you can't help but frown

Someone says something that's not so nice, you feel a sting in your heart cold as Ice.

It's just a joke they tried to explain, but even still, you couldn't help but feel pain.

You finally see that words can hurt, you realize words can make people feel like dirt.

But it's not what you do first it's what you do last. So you want to fix the things from your past.

You wanted to say how sorry you were, but found out something terrible had already occurred.

All because you weren't careful with your words...

While you were living a life that was great, they were living with an enormous weight.

A card tower that would crumble from a single touch, the weight eventually became just too much.

When you try to apologize for the things you've said, you find out it's to late cause they're already dead...

They had finally decided to end their life, all because you're words cut worse than a knife.

Be careful with the things you say, you might make someone not want to live another day.

In this world we have 2 choices. 2 ways we can use our voices.

There are words of life that speak joy and gladness, or words of death that bring destruction and madness.

We can choose to use the words that lift up, the kind of words that can fill people's cup.

Or we can use the words that tear down, the kind of words that can make people drown.

So my friend I leave you with one simple question, Just a quick thing I wanted to mention.

Which are the kind of words you speak? Words that make things bright or one's that make things bleak?

"The tongue has the power of life, and death." Proverbs 18:21

This topic is a little darker than I usually write about, but I don't just want to write about happy go lucky things because that's simply not real life. I want to write what's real, what's genuine, and what's in my heart. My hope is that this poem would cause people to think about their words. Think about what it truly is that they are letting come out of their mouths.

I do have to add... if you happen to be worrying about me right about now. Thanks, but you don't have to. It might seem like a cry for help, but it's only a cry for kindness. I've had a lot of people close to me who struggle with this kind of thing, and I've struggled with it myself in the past. So I do know what this feels like, but by the grace of God I don't feel that way anymore. I've found joy in the Lord and He is all I need.

"...Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."
Nehemiah 8:10
